About Kiyan Williams and Unearthing:
Unearthing is a performance that uses movement, storytelling, installation, and live-singing to reimagine Blackness, gender, and queer history. First developed at the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics at NYU, it has been presented at Stanford University, Dixon Place, and La Mama Experimental Theater Club. To learn more about Unearthing, visit Kiyan's website.
Kiyan Williams (whose gender pronouns they/them/theirs) is a multidisciplinary artist and writer who explores Black queer subjectivity. They create performances, texts, objects, videos, sounds, and installations informed by autoethnography, archival research, and social practice.
They have performed/exhibited work across the country and internationally at venues including: Stanford University (CA), Dixon Place (NY), JACK Theater (NY), La Mama Experimental Theater Club (NY), SOMArts (CA), SFMOMA (CA), Orpheum Theater (Austria) and more. Kiyan's honors and awards for their work include the EMERGENYC fellowship at the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics at NYU, Destiny Arts Center artist residency (Oakland, CA), Create Dangerously writing fellowship at the Obie-winning JACK Theater (Brooklyn, NY), Astraea Foundation Global Arts Fund, Stanford Arts Award, Trans Justice Funding Project Award, and the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Celebration of Our Inaugural GRAB BACK Feminist Incubator Program:
On behalf of the PES family, we would like to thank all the artists who have participated in our inaugural GRAB BACK Feminist Incubator program. Join us after the Unearthing performance to celebrate the last five months with a toast!
GRAB BACK: PES Feminist Incubator is an impromptu series of short-term residencies, happenings, conversations, performances, and public discourses focusing on the empowerment and freedom of women. Prompted by mainstream attention to what has become a normalized climate of hyper-misogyny, rape-culture, and dehumanization of women, GRAB BACK is a means of cultivating productive and critical intersectional dialogue and response to a violence against humanity.
