Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, if you meet the following criteria:
Open to individual artists, artist collectives, and arts organizations residing in the U.S. or U.S. territories
Individual applicants must be 18+ years of age
Collectives and organizations must designate a lead artist or representative
Arts organizations must be legally registered, e.g., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or a business entity
You must comply with all federal, state, and local laws, including permitting and contractual obligations
Employees of the commissioning agency, selection panel members, and their immediate family are not eligible
Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to complete a project of this scale within the set timeline and budget. Eligibility may be verified during the selection process.
Can I apply if I’m new to these mediums?
Yes. Experience in the proposed medium is not required, but you must show a strong track record of:
Public art projects
Site-specific installations
Related professional experience
If the medium is new to you, include a short statement on how you’ll approach the project, and list any collaborators or technical support you’ll work with.
How are project budgets handled?
Budgets should be holistic, including a line-item breakdown of all anticipated project costs.

Selected applicants and vendors will be contracted and paid directly by Project for Empty Space
A deposit will be issued upon agreement.
Is insurance required?
Yes. All participating artists and vendors must carry insurance.
If you don’t have coverage, Project for Empty Space can assist you in acquiring a policy, which will be treated as a project expense.
What happens to the artwork after the project ends?
At the end of the installation period, artists may:
Keep the work
Donate it to Project for Empty Space or the Newark City Parks Foundation (with prior approval)
Some works may be eligible for future exhibitions in city parks, depending on condition and maintenance considerations.
